The IO-3D-830-VLP by ThorLabs is an exceptional free-space isolator that can effectively reduce or even eliminate the undesirable effects of optical feedback. As we know, optical feedback can cause amplitude fluctuations, noise, and even damage to lasers. With the IO-3D-830-VLP, the user's laser is well-protected while ensuring beam alignment and offering maximum forward transmission and reverse isolation.

This high-quality isolator features a Faraday rotator in the shape of a black cylinder and at least two small polarizers with circular end caps. The Faraday rotator of the IO-3D-830-VLP is a magneto-optic material within a magnetic field, which rotates non-reciprocally. The engraved lines on the cells indicate the axis of polarization on the polarizer cells. The input cell is made of aluminum, while the output cell is made of stainless steel. Both polarizers are fixed in place and do not rotate with respect to each other.

It is essential to note that the IO-3D-830-VLP is a fixed wavelength isolator and cannot be tuned. This isolator is designed for maximum isolation at the center wavelength. If the laser deviates from this wavelength, rotation is no longer the ideal 45, and isolation decreases. Changes in wavelength and temperature can affect rotation. If the wavelength changes by >1%, isolation decreases sharply. This isolator has an output polarization of approximately 45° relative to that of the input. If another polarization plane is desired (usually horizontal or vertical), 1/2-wave retarders can be used. These retarders can rotate the output polarization to any desired linear orientation.

The IO-3D-830-VLP housing is marked with an arrow to indicate the direction of forward propagation. It is a fixed narrowband isolator, meaning it contains fixed, factory-aligned optics, where peak isolation and transmission occur at a pre-defined wavelength. This isolator is designed for use in the near-infrared spectral range, between 690 - 1080 nm. Additionally, the IO-3D-830-VLP can be mounted in a black slip ring, which has an 8-32 tapped hole for post-mounting.
