The LA4102 by ThorLabs is a top-of-the-line UV fused silica plano-convex lens that delivers exceptional performance in a variety of applications. With a diameter of Ø1", this lens can focus a collimated beam or collimate light from a point source with remarkable precision. One of the key advantages of the LA4102 is its ability to provide superior magnification compared to bi-convex lenses. When the desired absolute magnification is less than 0.2 or greater than 5, this lens is the preferred choice for achieving the desired result.
The UV-grade fused silica substrate of the LA4102 ensures high transmission in the deep UV and negligible laser-induced fluorescence. This makes it the perfect option for applications that range from the UV to the near IR. Additionally, the homogeneity of UV fused silica is superior to that of a N-BK7 substrate, and its coefficient of thermal expansion is lower. To ensure optimal performance of the lens, it is recommended to use a collimated light source when collimating on the curved surface and a point light source when focusing on the planar surface. This reduces the introduction of spherical aberration and ensures excellent image quality. Furthermore, the LA4102 can be used in place of achromatic doublets when image quality is not a primary concern.
