The LA4148-UV-ML by ThorLabs is a plano-convex lens, a high-performance optical element that is ideal for a wide range of applications. This lens boasts a Ø1" size in a threaded mount and comes with an antireflection (AR) coating for the 290 - 370 nm range that is deposited on both surfaces. The LA4148-UV-ML is fabricated from UV grade fused silica, which makes it an excellent choice for applications from the UV to the near IR. This material exhibits high transmission in the deep UV and little to no fluorescence that is laser-induced. Moreover, UV fused silica offers enhanced homogeneity and a reduced thermal expansion coefficient compared the commonly used N-BK7 fabrication.
One of the key features of the LA4148-UV-ML is its additional UV AR coating. This coating is particularly useful for applications with multiple optical elements since it improves transmission and prevents the undesirable effects associated with multiple reflections. With an uncoated substrate, approximately 4% of the incident light is reflected at each surface. The application of a UV AR coating greatly reduces this reflection and ensures that the LA4148-UV-ML performs optimally even in low-light conditions.
The LA4148-UV-ML has a positive focal length of 50.0 mm, which makes it one of the most popular types of lens elements. This plano-convex lens is commonly used to focus a collimated incident beam. To reduce the occurrence of spherical aberrations in certain applications, it is advisable to have a collimated light source fall on the curved surface when using this lens.
