The LA5255 by ThorLabs is a high-quality plano-convex lens that is meticulously constructed from vacuum-grade calcium fluoride (CaF2) substrate. The LA5255 is specifically designed for applications that require exceptional transmission in the infrared and ultraviolet spectral ranges, making it ideal for a wide range of scientific and industrial applications.
With a positive focal length of 250 mm, the LA5255 lens is optimized for both infinite and finite conjugate applications, ensuring superior performance in various optical setups. The CaF2 substrate used in the LA5255 lens boasts an impressively high laser damage threshold, making it compatible with excimer lasers, and exhibits a low refractive index in the 1.35 to 1.51 range inside the usage range of 180 nm to 8.0 μm. In addition, calcium fluoride is known for its excellent chemical inertness and remarkable hardness, surpassing its counterparts such as lithium fluoride, barium fluoride, and magnesium fluoride.
The LA5255 lens is designed to precisely focus collimated beams to the back focus, as well as collimate light from a point source. To ensure minimal spherical aberrations, it is recommended to gradually bend light as it propagates through the lens. For this reason, when using the LA5255 lens to focus a collimated light source, the collimated light should be incident on the curved surface. Similarly, when collimating a point source of light, the diverging light rays should be incident on the planar surface of the lens.
