The LC4924-UV by ThorLabs is a plano-concave lens that can be used in a wide range of applications due to its negative focal length of -20.0 mm. The LC4924-UV is particularly useful for applications with multiple optical elements because of its UV antireflection (AR) coating that covers both surfaces. The AR coating is designed for the 245 - 400 nm range and significantly improves transmission by reducing unwanted reflections, such as ghost images.

The LC4924-UV lens is fabricated out of UV-grade fused silica, which has a larger rate of transmission in the deep UV and displays minimal fluorescence that is laser-induced at 193 nm. This feature makes it an excellent choice for use in applications that range between the near infrared (IR) and the UV. Additionally, UV fused silica boasts a thermal expansion with a lower coefficient and superior homogeneity compared to N-BK7, making the LC4924-UV a more reliable option for precise optical systems.

The LC4924-UV is frequently employed to separate an aligned incoming beam of light and should be directed onto the curved face to eliminate optical aberrations as much as possible. The LC4924-UV produces virtual images and is typically used as the optic at the entrance in Galilean-type beam expanders, where it provides the desired divergence, and a doublet is used to collimate the beam again. Researchers often carefully select their optics to ensure that the aberrations introduced by the negative focal length and positive focal length are approximately canceled, and others use these lenses in pairs in order to expand the converging lens’ effective focal length.
