The LCC25 by ThorLabs is a liquid crystal controller designed for compatibility with most liquid crystal (LC) devices. If a reliable and versatile controller is needed, the LCC25 is an excellent choice for several applications. The LCC25 controller connects to a liquid crystal device through its BNC voltage output port, enabling precise control of retardance using a combination of front-panel knob, external signal, and computer interface via USB. The output voltage amplitude, which is adjustable from 0 to 25 VRMS, and external signal modulate the AC square wave frequency of 2 kHz to regulate the retardance of the LC device.

The LCC25 is designed with an automatic feature that zeros the DC bias across the LC device to prevent the buildup of charges, which can cause the device to burn out. Nematic LC retarders must be driven with an AC voltage, and the LCC25 produces a 2 kHz AC square wave, ideal for preventing charge buildup and extending the life of the device. The LCC25 controller is specifically designed to detect and quickly adjust any DC offset up to ±10 mV, thus optimizing the performance of the LC device.

Controlling the LCC25 is simple and user-friendly. The tactile buttons on the front panel allow the user to select the voltage and frequency, while the knob lets the user adjust the levels. The controller has a 16 x 2 LCD display that shows the voltage and frequency, making it easy to monitor and adjust settings. The LCC25 comes with an interface that allows access to two selectable set points of Voltage 1 and Voltage 2. Both set points are controlled by the user, and they produce a square wave that is plus/minus the set point. The AC output voltage amplitude can be set using the front panel controls, an external 0 - 5 VDC TTL input, or via the USB interface.

The LCC25 also features a Modulation mode, which allows the amplitude of the 2000 Hz square wave output to switch between Voltage 1 and Voltage 2 at a frequency that can be set internally (0.5 Hz to 150 Hz) or triggered externally with 0 to 5 V TTL input (0.5 Hz to 500 Hz). This mode can also be used to measure the response time of the LC retarder. The LCC25 is equipped with two BNC connectors, with the top BNC functioning as the external input and allowing the user to input an external modulation frequency square wave up to 5 volts, while the bottom BNC serves as the system output. Additionally, the user has the option to control the LCC25 through USB port command line language, making it perfect for those who want to manage it through a terminal interface or create a personalized program.
