The NDUV10B by ThorLabs is an exceptional reflective neutral density (ND) filter meticulously crafted from UV fused silica substrates with nickel coating deposited on one side, resulting in a flat spectral response. With a size of Ø25 mm, the NDUV10B is an unmounted, metallic filter that can be utilized in the 200 - 1200 nm spectral range.
The NDUV10B’s UV fused silica substrate has almost no fluorescence that is laser-induced, as measured at 193 nm, and stellar transmission. This feature makes this filter a great choice for UV to near IR applications. Although the lower limit of the spectral range, which is 200 nm, is restricted by the substrate's light absorption, UV fused silica provides outstanding transmission up to 2.1 µm. Consequently, the upper limit of 1200 nm is determined by the increased opacity of the nickel coating. The NDUV10B is equipped with a small, flat ground edge to distinguish it from N-BK7 reflective ND filters. Furthermore, its optical density (OD) is specified at the design wavelength of 300 nm to facilitate its use in the UV.
It is important to note that the NDUV10B filter has an unprotected metal coating and should only be cleaned using blown air. Contact with the filter may cause scratching to the unprotected surface. Additionally, the nickel coating absorbs some of the incident light, limiting its use to low-power applications. While nickel is resistant to aging under normal conditions, it will oxidize at elevated temperatures. As a result, it is recommended to use the NDUV10B at temperatures below 100 °C to prevent oxidation. To ensure optimum performance, light should be incident on the side with the nickel coating, allowing attenuation to occur before etalon effects arise within the filter's substrate.
