The NE50A Neutral Density Filter from Thorlabs is a mounted absorptive filter designed for use in a wide range of optical applications. With a diameter of 25mm and an SM1-threaded mount, it is directly compatible with various optomechanical components such as cage systems and lens tube accessories. The housing of the NE50A is engraved with both the part number and the optical density, making it easily identifiable.

This ND filter is made with specially-selected Schott glass substrate which allows it to have minimal effect on the spectrum of light in the 400-650nm range. This ensures that the final result has a higher quality compared to filters made out of different materials. The Schott glass provides a more stable and predictable performance compared to reflective metallic filters. The NE50A has an optical density of 5.0, which indicates the amount of light it reduces by a factor of 100,000. The filter has a transmission rate of 1x10^-3%. The NE50A ND filter is ideal for low-power applications (<1 W) and has a clear aperture of >Ø22.5mm. The filter can be easily removed from its housing by unscrewing the retaining ring that secures it to the mount. However, it is recommended to calibrate the filter within the user setup before taking any quantitative measurements. 

As with all delicate optical components, the NE50A requires proper handling and cleaning to maintain its performance and extend its lifetime. Optics should be inspected prior to use and before and after cleaning, and a magnification device may be necessary to inspect the optical component. It is also recommended to wear gloves when handling the filter and to avoid touching the optical surface with bare hands. The NE50A should be stored in a clean, temperature-controlled environment and wrap it in lens tissue before placing it in an optic storage box. Avoid placing the filter on hard surfaces and keep it in a low humidity, low contaminant environment. Proper storage is important to preserve the quality of the optical component. It is important to note that the NE50A is an uncoated filter and is not designed for use as laser safety equipment. Practicing proper handling techniques and avoiding contaminants such as dust, water, and skin oils will maximize its lifetime and performance.
