The PBS122 by ThorLabs is a highly efficient polarizing beamsplitter cube designed for optical applications in the wavelength range of 620 to 1000 nm. With its compact size of 1/2", the PBS122 is made from high-quality N-SF1 glass and is equipped with a dielectric beamsplitter coating that enables it to separate s-polarization and p-polarization components with remarkable accuracy.
The PBS122 utilizes reflection to block the s-component and allow the p-component to go right through it. Its design is optimized for use with the transmitted beam, providing a TP:TS > 1000:1 extinction ratio, which ensures superior performance in a wide range of optical applications. On the other hand, the reflected beam has an extinction ratio of approximately 20:1 or 100:1.
The PBS122 cube is made of two prisms and the dielectric beamsplitting coating is carefully applied to the hypotenuse of one of them. The two prism halves are then firmly bound together using cement, ensuring the cube's durability and longevity. A dot on the top of the cube makes it easier to identify which prism carries a beamsplitting coating, making it more convenient for various applications. The PBS122 is designed to easily differentiate between P and S polarizations, with the capability to take input from any of its multiple polished faces. For convenience, the PBS122 also features engraved arrows that indicate one of the possible orientations of the cube, making it easier for users to align and configure it correctly.
