The WPH05M-1030 by ThorLabs is an advanced optical accessory designed to provide users with superior polarization control. The WPH05M-1030 is a zero-order half-wave plate with a Ø1/2" size and is constructed with two separate multi-order wave plates that are composed of crystalline quartz that are carefully aligned to achieve a λ/2 optical path length difference. Proper alignment of a fast-axis plate with a slow-axis plate results in a compound retarder whose value is the difference between the two plates' individual retardance. This offers many advantages, including more accurate control of light polarization. This design feature enables precise control of the polarization state of light passing through the wave plate.

To ensure optimal performance, the WPH05M-1030 is built using a high-quality spacing ring made of stainless steel that is etched for maximum precision. The three components - two multi-order wave plates and the spacing ring - are then epoxyed together, with the adhesive applied to the wave plate on the clear aperture only on the outside to ensure that there is no interference with the optical properties of the wave plate. Once assembled, the components are placed inside the durable anodized aluminum frame of the WPH05M-1030. This frame is marked with the wave plate’s fast axis orientation, along with details that confirm it is a zero-order half-wave plate and its designed wavelength.

The WPH05M-1030 is designed for easy installation and use in a variety of settings. It features SM05-threads that allow it to be threaded directly onto compatible SM05-threaded rotation mounts, and it can be easily removed from these mounts for use in custom or OEM applications. Simply use a spanner wrench to remove the retaining ring that secures the optic in the mount. Additionally, the unmounted wave plates have a small flat to indicate the fast axis, making it easy to identify and manipulate the device. The WPH05M-1030's air-spaced design is optimized for a high damage threshold and a discrete wavelength of 1030 nm. This design feature makes the device an ideal choice for demanding applications where precise polarization control is required, such as in laser systems or in scientific research.
