The FW1A by ThorLabs is a versatile filter wheel station that is expertly designed to accommodate up to six Ø1" (Ø25 mm) filters, that all have a maximum thickness of 4 mm (0.15"). This filter wheel station provides compact, convenient filter organizers in a single-wheel configuration and allows the user to configure up to 36 unique filter combinations. Additionally, the FW1A filter wheel station consists of one filter wheel, a pedestal, and a base.

The mounting holes of the FW1A are SM1-threaded and each hole has the filter position clearly engraved on the surface for added convenience. A SM-threaded retaining ring can be used in order to mount filter that is a maximum of 4 mm thick into the filter wheel when removed from the mounting hole. Then, the filter should be placed flesh against the hole’s back lip inside the threaded hole, and then with a retaining ring, the filter can be locked into place. Filters thicker than 4 mm can also be mounted into the FW1A once the retaining ring is removed and the appropriate Ø1" lens tube is threaded into a mounting hole on the filter wheel.

The pedestal of the FW1A is universal and can be used to mount the filter wheel station, and each pedestal can be used to mount up to two filter wheels. The filter wheel is secured to the pedestal using a central screw, which allows for easy removal and installation of a different filter wheel when entire sets of filters are replaced in an optical setup. Common filter configurations for the filter wheel station include both chromatic and progressive ND filters, which enable quick adjustment of optical intensity attenuation or wavelength range by simply indexing the wheel. In addition, the pedestal can be removed from the base to allow for mounting to posts or other bases. The base of the FW1A allows for direct securing to an optical table or optical breadboard. Alternatively, if desired, the base can be removed, and the pedestal can be mounted on a compatible Ø1/2" post.
