The ThorLabs FW212CW is a versatile and efficient position filter wheel designed for use in a range of automated applications including color CCD photography, photometry, and fluorescence microscopy. The FW212CW can accommodate a variety of motorized housings, making it an ideal option for those seeking flexibility in their automated setups.

The FW212CW features 12 positions for Ø1/2" (Ø12.5 mm) optics, with a maximum optic thickness of 0.25” (6.35 mm). The compatible housing for this filter wheel is internally SM1 threaded, allowing for easy connection to externally SM1-threaded optomechanics. Additionally, four 4-40 taps are centered around each port, making the filter wheel compatible with our 30 mm cage systems. The bottom of the FW212CW's compatible housing features one 8-32 tap, one M4 tap, two 1/4"-20 taps, and two M6 taps, creating a multitude of options for mounting the filter wheel housing to a Ø1/2" or Ø1" post.

The FW212CW offers multiple options for filter selection, including manual push button arrows on the top of the unit or remote selection using the USB 2.0 interface, BNC input, or RS-232 connection. The BNC input rotates the filter wheel when a TTL-level signal is applied, and can also be configured as an output trigger in the software. The easy-to-read display indicates the selected filter position, with adjustable display intensity making the FW212CW appropriate for light-sensitive environments. Automation of filter sequences is available through the USB 2.0 or RS-232 interfaces, along with a simple-to-use GUI application program. A simple command language facilitates the filter selections and the retrieval of filter status.

The FW212CW can be interchanged with another wheel of the same number of positions by turning off the power to the motorized filter wheel, unscrewing the thumbscrew on the front of the housing, and removing the front cover. The filter wheel can then be removed and another wheel can be inserted. While it is possible to switch the FW212CW with a wheel of a different number of positions, the user must manually adjust the settings of the motorized filter wheel to the new number of positions. This is done by holding the top two arrow buttons for approximately three seconds and then changing the filter position value to either six or twelve.
