The ThorLabs PTP503 is a reliable set of four Passive Isolator Optical Table Supports designed to remove floor vibrations in the critical 10 Hz to 50 Hz frequency range. These table supports have a passive air mount design that provides low frequency isolation and excellent stability in both horizontal and vertical directions, making it ideal for most general optical table uses.

The PTP503 is constructed with thick walls for maximum safety and overload protection, while still maintaining an economical design. Even with no air pressure, the air mount continues to support and isolate the attached optical table. The closed pneumatic isolation system isolates the optical table effectively against floor vibrations in the frequency range of 10 to 50 Hz. This feature makes the PTP503 an excellent choice for general imaging and micropositioning based experiments.

With a height of 700 mm high, the PTP503 allows any standard compatible table tops to be mounted at a nominal working height of 910 mm (36 in.) above the floor. Each table support has a rubber air mount that is cylindrical and reinforced in the top of a cylindrical steel leg. The rubber mount is bolted to a base plate fixed to the leg by 3 anchors. The table top rests on a steel plate, which is bolted to the air mount. The height of the table top is adjusted by admitting or releasing air into the mount via a standard Schraeder valve, situated on the side of each PTP503 table support.

To ensure maximum effectiveness of the PTP503, it is essential to avoid any instability due to the system center of mass being misplaced. The location and height of a load placed on a table top can dramatically affect the stability of the table system. In order to avoid dynamic instability and oscillation due to excessive rocking, the center of mass, including that of the table, should be within the pyramid defined by connecting the center point of each isolator with an apex point, whose vertical height is equal to 1/2 the shortest distance between isolators.

The PTP503 provides simple and effective passive vibration isolation with excellent vertical and horizontal stability. The closed pneumatic isolation system can be expanded with a foot pump or another compressed air source and does not require a source of compressed air that is constant in order to sustain isolation. The optical table will stay supported securely on the frame of the supports even if depressurization of the pneumatic isolation system occurs. Alternatively, the optical table will be prevented from rising above the designed range maximum by vertical stops if the air chamber is overinflated. If the table is at either end of the range of motion, the PTP503 cease to isolate an optical table from vibrations from the floor.
