The RCN1 by ThorLabs is a highly reliable rail carrier return positioner, specifically designed to aid in the fine alignment of optics mounted on a dovetail rail carrier. This positioner is composed of a spring-loaded plunger integrated into a dovetail rail clamp that can travel a maximum range of 0.25" (6.3 mm), allowing for highly precise adjustments to be made. The RCN1's compression spring tension can also be easily adjusted using a 5/32" (4.0 mm) hex key.

Additionally, the RCN1 can be used in conjunction with the RCN positioner, providing precision alignment in either direction on the rail's axis. When using the two positioners together, the carrier positioners are placed between the carrier and return carrier, with the adjustment screw pushing the carrier towards the RCN1 return positioner. The retraction of the adjustment screw on the RCN results in the expansion of the return positioner’s spring loaded plunger, keeping the rail carrier in contact with an actuating screw. For optimal results, both positioners should be secured by tightening the thumbscrews, and the clamp holding the carrier or carriage to the rail should be loosened. Turning the adjuster screw with a 5/64" (2.0 mm) balldriver will then push the carrier until the desired amount of translation is achieved, making the process of fine-tuning the optics mounted on the rail carrier an effortless task.
