The SHB05 by ThorLabs is a precision shutter device designed to provide optimal performance for laboratory applications. The SHB05 is a compact, stainless steel diaphragm shutter with five uncoated leaves that deliver a Ø0.508" aperture. This shutter comes with an included controller that drives its optimal performance and monitors its state, ensuring maximum safety and protection.

The SHB05 has been designed to meet the demands of modern laboratories, with a compact and durable housing that measures just Ø1.10" and 0.29" thick. The SHB05 is driven by an included controller that connects through a shielded four-conductor cable using a four-pin, mini-DIN connector. The controller has a BNC connector for external modulation, providing seamless integration with existing laboratory equipment.

The SHB05 can be controlled directly from the buttons on the controller, or via an external modulation source, providing the user with a versatile and flexible solution for specific laboratory needs. The controller features two buttons on top of the unit, one to turn the power on and off and the other labeled ENABLE, to open or close the shutter. With the ENABLE button, Manual and External Modulation Modes can be easily switched between, depending on the needs of the user.

Safety is a top priority when it comes to laboratory equipment, and the SHB05 has a variety of safety features to ensure the protection of the shutter. The internal optical sensor inside the shutter package detects the state of the shutter, confirming whether it's open or closed. This feature, along with the interlock connector, makes the SHB05 ideal for applications where a laser safety lockout is required. In case of a failure, the shutter will shut down, changing the state of the interlock, and the LED light will turn red. The SHB05 can detect when the blades are not operating at the set frequency and will shut down to prevent damage to the device.

The SHB05's external modulation port can drive the shutter up to a maximum frequency of 25 Hz. In normal operation, the logic of the external modulation pulse will control the opening and closing of the shutter. The SHB05 has been designed with an additional safety feature that will shut it down if it's run at its max frequency for too long to prevent overheating. However, if the user needs to run the device for an extended period without thermal control, the Unprotected Mode will disable this safety feature.
