The VT1 by ThorLabs is a cutting-edge variable terminator that empowers users to optimize signal performance with ease. Designed for precision, the VT1 allows the user to set a high resistance for increased signal strength during beam alignment, and then effortlessly lower the resistance to achieve greater bandwidth for enhanced performance.
With a resistance tolerance value of ±5%, the VT1 ensures accurate and reliable results in various applications. It offers a wide range of seven discrete resistance values, including 50 Ω, 100 Ω, 500 Ω, 1 kΩ, 5 kΩ, 10 kΩ, and 50 kΩ, which can be easily selected using the outer rotary barrel. This flexibility allows the user to tailor the resistance to a specific application, providing unparalleled versatility in signal optimization. Please note that as the resistance is increased above 50 Ω, the bandwidth may decrease due to back reflections. At higher resistance values, as the cable lengthens, the bandwidth may further decrease.
The VT1 is specifically designed for use with a reverse biased photodiode, where it converts absorbed photons into photocurrent. A load resistor is placed across the output of the detector, and the voltage drop across the resistor is measured using an oscilloscope or multimeter. The VT1's compatibility with a wide range of resistance values allows that user to customize the load resistor to the desired level, with 50 Ω typically used to maximize signal bandwidth.
