The TEC2000 by ThorLabs is a thermoelectric controller that is designed to stabilize the wavelength of laser diodes and reduce the noise levels of detectors. The TEC2000 offers highly precise temperature control for laser diodes and detectors and is also capable of tuning the wavelength by regulating the temperature and modulating the temperature to modulate the wavelength.

The TEC2000 comes with an adjustable PID controller and a low noise bipolar current source that drives a thermoelectric cooler element. The controller offers a bi-directional output, allowing a single TEC element to both cool and heat. It features a 4 ½-digit backlit LCD display that shows the set point temperature, actual temperature, TEC current, and current limit, with measurement values selected via press buttons.

The TEC2000 provides complete flexibility in optimizing the temperature controller to various thermal loads. It uses full Proportional, Integral, and Derivative (PID) feedback control, enabling users to independently set the proportional gain (P), integral gain (I), and derivative gain (D) of the control loop to accommodate most thermal loads, ensuring higher repeatability. The TEC current limit can be set between 0 and 2A, which prevents overdriving the TEC. Thermal response time is dependent on many factors, including the thermal properties of materials used and the physical layout of the system, all of which can affect the system's behavior. The TEC2000's complete flexibility and response times ensure that the system's behavior is stable, with no significant overshoots in the settling of the temperature.

The TEC2000 is compatible with almost all commercially available temperature sensors. If used with a thermistor, the temperature display is shown as a resistance value in kΩ. If operating with a temperature IC (AD590/592 or LM335), the temperature is shown in °C. The temperature sensor options can be selected by a switch mounted on the rear panel. Additionally, the TEC2000 is equipped with a cooling fan and an over-temperature protection circuit. An LED OPEN indicator illuminates if an incorrect sensor or no temperature sensor is connected, or if the connection to the TE cooler is interrupted.

The TEC2000 offers two BNCs on the rear panel for external control and monitoring of the device temperature. The TUNE IN feature allows the temperature to be set with an external voltage, while the CTL OUT provides a voltage proportional to the measured temperature. These features are useful for tuning laser wavelengths by temperature.
