The MMR601 from Thorlabs is a versatile and high-performance modular APT rack system, designed for integration with a standard 19 in. frame. The controllers built into the MMR601 share many of the advanced features and capabilities of the extensive range of motor, piezo, and auto-alignment controllers from Thorlabs. These include USB connectivity, which allows multiple units to be easily controlled from a single PC, and a fully featured graphical user interface (GUI) panel, providing effortless control of all settings and operating modes.

The Kinesis software suite is an integral part of the MMR601, offering a flexible and powerful PC-based control system for both end-users and software developers. The user interface allows for full control of all system parameters, with the ability to easily log all system activity for troubleshooting purposes. The Kinesis server is also used by software developers to rapidly create advanced automated positioning applications.

The rack system architecture, hardware, and software of the MMR601 have been carefully designed to provide an efficient and effective solution for complex high-channel count applications. The front panel of the rack is uncluttered, with six rear-mounting bays for plug-in modules. The backplane of the rack connects all modules and the control PC via a standard USB bus, which greatly simplifies cable management in large systems. The integral power supply is both flexible and energy-efficient, providing a "mix-and-match" choice of module type, location, and combination. Each module is equipped with an onboard DSP embedded processor, ensuring maximum operating efficiency even when the system is fully loaded.

As required, additional racks can be added to the USB bus of the MMR601, allowing multiple fully automated 6-axis positioning stages to be combined into a single unified motion control system. The PC-based software used to drive the system operates from the same multithreaded server code and high-level user applications used for stand-alone benchtop controllers, allowing for effortless code-porting and concurrent control of benchtop and rack controllers. The software is engineered using modern object-oriented techniques, ensuring compatibility with a large number of third-party development tools, and all key high-level commands, settings, and system parameters are exposed through a set of software functions. This allows the MMR601 to be easily controlled from user-written applications without the need to understand or alter the core system software.
