The 1500M-GE by ThorLabs is a scientific CCD camera that serves as a powerful tool for demanding scientific imaging applications, including microscopy. With a resolution of 1.4 megapixels and a readout of 23 frames per second at 40 MHz, this camera is ideal for multispectral imaging, fluorescence microscopy, and other techniques that require high quantum efficiency and low noise.

One of the standout features of the 1500M-GE is its low read noise, which improves the threshold of detectability under low light conditions. The camera produces four types of noise components: dark shot noise, which arises from a dark current that flows even when no photos are incident on the camera; read noise, which is generated in producing an electronic signal; photon shot noise, which is statistical noise that can be connected to photon arrival at the pixel; and fixed pattern noise, which is caused by spatial non-uniformities of the pixels and is independent of the signal level and temperature level of the sensor.

The 1500M-GE comes with a range of optical and mounting components, including a C-Mount adapter, a lock nut, a lens cap, and an IR blocking filter. The C-Mount adapter allows the camera to be optically coupled with standard C-mount optics, while the lock nut secures the c-mount adapter to the main camera body. A lens cap is provided as a protective cover that should be used when the camera is not in use. The IR blocking filter is typically held in place by a filter retaining ring and is intended to cut off at higher wavelengths. For optimal performance, a C-Mount lens that corresponds with the 2/3” imaging area optical format is recommended.

The 1500M-GE is based on the Sony ICX285 interline CCD, which provides 1392 x 1020 pixel resolution and 6.45 µm square pixels. It comes with a standard configuration as well as a Gigabit Ethernet interface (GigE), which supports speeds up to 100 MB/s and cable lengths up to 100 m. With a Gigabit Ethernet switch, support for multiple cameras is easily achieved. Other features of the 1500M-GE include high quantum efficiency that maximizes signal and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), as well as asynchronous reset, triggered, and bulb exposure modes available on the camera.
